  • Terribly bad transmission

    From Tom|alreadyWednesday, June 30, 2021

    3.0

I bought it used with 12,000 miles on it for just under $20,000. After 55k miles I need a new transmission. Fortunately, the extended warranty covers up to 85k miles. I still have $12,000 to pay. There is no point in buying an Altima if you want the car to last

  • CVT is the sword of Damacles, but otherwise good

    From ki6fzb|alreadySunday, November 29, 2020

    3.0

I bought this car in 2016 with 30,000 miles on it and sold it 4 1/2 years later for 135,000 (I say "sold" but I actually think it was in an accident...more on that in a bit). During a period of unemployment, I needed a vehicle to earn money through ridesharing and other app gigs. In the short term, the Altima performed wonderfully. It is attractive, comfortable with decent luggage space. However, towards the end of my tenure, I noticed that if I was in overdrive, the transmission would get stuck in 1st gear and I would have to downshift to fix it. Consulting the internet, I found out about this poor CVT design. After over 80k miles the Nissan warranty expired and all I could do was pray. Fortunately for me, the CVT problem has never been worse than this. Early transmission mortality was between 100,000 and 120,000 miles I found and I somehow got it to 135,000. The only major repair was that the radiator should have cracked at 100,000 miles, which is generally normal. It's annoying that the electric mirrors were discontinued earlier. As mentioned earlier, we had an accident where a distracted driver rear-ended us at about 40 mph when we were in a dead end. It completely destroyed the trunk and broke the rear window. Luckily no one was in the back or they would have been covered in glass. I'm a bit ambivalent about the safety rating, as the rear end absorbed the force well, but apart from the broken rear window, the airbags didn't deploy. Minus one star for reliability. Aside from the ticking time bomb scare of a malfunctioning CVT, it was a very enjoyable car. The turning radius wasn't as tight as I'm used to, but it had decent power for a 4-cylinder sedan. After carpooling, I eventually got married and had a child for whom the Altima was great. I will also never get used to not having keyless entry, keyless ignition and bluetooth. So I give it 2 stars for reliability, and a bad CVT equals a loss of 2 stars. That's right, if it wasn't for that damn CVT I'd give it 4 stars. Nissan extended the warranty to cover the faulty CVT. A great buy only if you plan to own it before 100k miles. Otherwise either buy an extended warranty beyond that or buy a Honda.

  • I absolutely love my Altima!

    5.0

I traded in my 2014 Ford Focus for a 2016 Altima SV in December 2016. I bought it brand new with 54 miles on the odometer and now have about 29,200 miles on it. I absolutely love this vehicle. I've wanted a bigger vehicle than my Focus for so long and the Focus had the infamous DCT issues and I didn't want to deal with it any more while it was in the shop than on the road. I put almost 30,000 miles in about a year in this car traveling to Oklahoma, Louisiana and even Florida (which was 983 miles one way). Gasoline consumption is incredible. I typically get 31 mpg with city and highway miles. On a Florida road trip I got 38 mpg and went about 660 miles on ONE TANK!!! My Focus would be happy to go 350 miles on one tank! The 2.5L is an amazing engine paired with a CVT. Strong, continuous accelerations. It takes about 7.7 seconds to go from 0-60 mph, which is incredible for its size and 4 cylinders. I was also looking for comfort as the seats in the Focus weren't that great and I have sciatic nerve issues. Many suggested the Altima because of the comfortable seats. I like the safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and backup camera. Another thing that is very nice is that in most cars with a sunroof, the roof is very low. I'm 6ft 2in and my head was almost always touching the roof of some sunroof cars, so I never wanted a sunroof car. After being able to fit in my sunroof Altima, it's amazing. As I said earlier, the seats are really comfortable. I like the remote start. The seats are also made of a microfiber cloth which makes it easy to clean (I'm super OCD when it comes to keeping my car clean). I would highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a stylish, fast, safe, comfortable and reliable car.
