Summary of PowerStroke power and torque
The Ford 7.3 turbodiesel was no mean feat even in 1994. 210 horsepower and 425 torque were very respectable numbers for the time. Ford and International kept up with the times and upgraded the 7.3 Powerstroke to eventually raise the numbers to 275 hp and 525 torque in manual versions. The 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke engines raised the bar higher.
However, all Ford diesels pale in comparison to the 3rd gen 6.7 Powerstroke. The specifications of the 6.7-liter diesel are incredible. With 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, it has serious capability. For reference, the Ford 6.7L diesel makes the same torque as some pickup trucks. Although, semi-trucks use much larger engines and deliver torque at slightly lower revs. However, it does show how far Powerstroke engines have come over the years. Even crazier, the high-performance version released in 2023 has 1,200 lb-ft. of torque, which is 125 lb-ft. more than closing competitors,6,7 Cummins.
Below, we'll briefly discuss each Ford Power Stroke engine along with some updates to increase horsepower and torque.
Ford 7.3 Powerstroke (1994.-2003.)
The Ford/International 7.3L turbodiesel engine debuted in the F-250 and F-350 in 1994. The specs and horsepower of the 7.3 Powerstroke were outstanding for its time period. However, there are always areas for small improvements that can lead to big gains in power and torque.
The Navistar International 7.3 diesel went through some minor updates and software modifications in 1996 and 1997. This helped boost the turbodiesel engine to 215-225hp and 450tq.
In 1999, Ford 7.3 Powerstroke engines received their first major update. An intercooler was added to keep the temperature under control, which in turn helps the engine make more reliable and consistent power. To support the increase in power and torque, Ford also switched to higher flow fuel injectors. In its final years the 7.3 diesel combined with a manual transmission produced an impressive 275 horsepower and 525 torque.

Ford 6.0 Power Stroke (2003.-2007.)
In 2003, Ford began phasing out the 7.3 diesel engine with the introduction of the 6.0 Powerstroke. Although the Powerstroke has lost a full 1.3 liters of displacement, it still makes 325 horsepower and 560-570 torque. A solid increase over the previous 7.3 liter engine. Again, the specs are pretty solid for the 6.0 era, although they might pale in comparison to the newer 6.7L diesel.
There were no significant power or torque updates over the 6.0 Power Stroke. Some minor tweaks and software updates were made to increase the engine's torque to 570 from 560.
The 6.0-litre diesel engines were launched in an era of stricter emissions laws. The engine suffered from some common issues due to these updates. Unfortunately, that's the trend for diesel engines in general. 6.4 Horsepower PowerStroke (2008-2010)
The 6.4 liter turbodiesel engines had the shortest lifespan of the entire Powerstroke engine family. It lasted only 3 years and produced 350 hp and 650 torque for its lifetime. There were no major updates to this engine during its fast run in the F-250 and F-350 trucks.
This is also the last Power Stroke engine built by International. That's part of the reason the 6.4-litre diesel was so short-lived as Ford began building its own Powerstroke engine in-house.6.4 Power Diopter Exception 390 cu. u. Ford 6.7L Power Stroke (2011-present) specs.
Ford's 6.7 Powerstroke engine delivers impressive specs and horsepower. It has been around for a while and is now in its third generation. Ford has made some great updates to the 6.7 diesel engine to improve reliability, horsepower and torque. It was already a solid engine with 400 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque when it launched in 2011. Since then, however, Ford has really taken things up a notch.
The 2015 Powerstroke 6.7L engines received updates to the exhaust, turbo and fuel system. These updates resulted in an increase of 40 hp and 60 torque in the first year of the 2nd generation 6.7 Powerstroke. A few minor software updates and improvements helped squeeze even more power out of the engine for 2019.
Then – for the 2020 F-250 and F-350 model years – Ford introduced the 3rd generation 6.7L turbodiesel. It puts out a whopping 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Yes, 1050 torque! This made the 6.7 Powerstroke the best torque in its class.
2023 brought a high-performance version of the 6.7-liter engine. The high-performance version uses a larger supercharger to add 25 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque via the standard output motor. In addition, the Super Duty line of trucks received a new engine option with its addition6.8 liter "mini" Godzilla engine, its smaller version7.3 liter Godzilla.6.7 Power Diopter Exception 406 cubic meters in.
