Ford F-150 Towing Capabilities (1996-2019) (2023)

There have been tons of Ford F-150s built from the ground up and I thought it would be cool to see how much towing capacity each year the F-150 could handle as far as I could find the data.

These are the towing capabilities of all F-150 models out there and are not as detailed as they appear, just a "quick reference" type guide. This data includes all Ford F-150 models, 4×2 and 4×4 models, Regular Cab, Crew Cab and Super Cab. This is a summary of information provided by Ford Motor Co.

Here it is!

Models 2019. and 2018.:

F-150s seem to be getting more outrageous, and the newer 2018-2019 models have plenty of engine options to choose from. The 3.5L had some of the besttraction ratingsof all engines, once you add the upgraded tow/payload packages and it's a 6 cylinder engine!

Average towing capacity for 2018-2019 Ford F-150 models (automatic transmission) ranged from 5,000 pounds to 13,200 pounds, with higher capacities with optional towing packages naturally installed. The lowest weight ratings are associated with the Limited and Raptor models.

Model 2014-2011:

Ford F-150s used from 2011 to 2014 used the same engines and had very similar specifications with slightly different towing capabilities. The lowest towing capacities are found in the Limited, SVT Raptor and Harley Davidson truck versions, which is why the range is so drastic in some cases, such as for the 6.2-liter engine.

Generally speaking, Ford F-150s built from 2011 to 2014 were specified with automatic transmissions only and had a maximum towing capacity of 5,500 pounds to 11,300 pounds. Greater towing capabilities required the use of additional packages such as the heavy-duty payload package, The Max. Trailer towing package (or both).

A few words about axle ratios...

In many of the towing charts I've listed, you'll need to know your axle ratio to get the most accurate towing number possible. You'll need to do some research, but I'll walk you through the process and you might be surprised at how simple it really is!

The easiest way:

1. The first thing you want to do is open the driver's door and look for a sticker on the door panel with all the useful information. It will be on the right side of the door, on the same side as the handle.

2. On this label, usually near the bottom, you will find a code that says "AXLE" and below that you will see letters/numbers or a combination of both, as shown in the image below.

Ford F-150 Towing Capabilities (1996-2019) (59)

3. Take this code and useblueovaltrucks.comcrack the code and you will have your axle ratio!

Alternative method:

You can always climb under your F-150 and look at your rear differential, locate the stamped marks or sticker attached to the case cover and learn the axle ratio from that. However, this can be more difficult to detect in some model years.

1997-1998 F-150 Towing Capacity:

1997-1998 Ford F-150 it had three different engine displacements and similar towing capabilities to the 1999-2000, but they were slightly different, so I decided to build another set of plates. However, the 5.4 liter engine (NGV) was not offered between those years.

Average towing capacity for a Ford F-150 manufactured between 1997-1998. it ranged from £4400 to £8000. for trucks equipped with an automatic transmission and 1700 lbs.-3600 lbs. on trucks equipped with a manual transmission.

Towing capacity for 1996 F-150s ranged from 4,600 pounds to 7,700 pounds when equipped with the automatic transmission and ranged from 1,700 pounds to 3,600 pounds. if they came equipped with a manual transmission.
